    Educational Objectives:

    1. Examine the burden of obesity, current guideline criteria and patient-specific factors to identify appropriate candidates for GLP-1 RA and dual GIP/GLP-1 RA therapies in people with obesity

    2. Apply evidence-based principles for initiating, titrating, and optimizing GLP-1 RA, dual GIP/GLP-1 RA, and emerging therapies for people with obesity

    3. Personalize patient-centered counseling strategies that combine nutritional and lifestyle changes with addressing common barriers to patient adherence with GLP-1 RA and dual GIP/GLP-1 RA therapies for obesity treatment

    Overview:

Obesity affects more than 40% of US adults and is coming to be recognized as a chronic disease associated with significant cardiometabolic comorbidities. Despite the availability of effective pharmacologic options, including FDA-approved glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) and dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide/GLP-1 receptor agonists (GIP/GLP-1 RAs), fewer than 25% of individuals with obesity receive evidence-based treatment. Undertreatment has meaningful consequences, as the downstream cardiometabolic complications continue to progress, placing an avoidable burden on patients and the health care system. This case-based meeting is designed to support timely identification of appropriate candidates for GLP-1 RA and dual GIP/GLP-1 RA therapies using current obesity guideline criteria and strategies to improve continued use. Speakers will discuss the factors driving clinical inertia and solutions that pharmacists can facilitate through interventions. Through a small-group case discussion workshop, participants will engage directly with the clinical and patient-level challenges encountered in everyday practice and apply patient-centered counseling strategies to support more appropriate use of GLP-1 RA and dual GIP/GLP-1 RA therapies, as well as the potential role of emerging therapies. This activity will review shared decision-making and the importance of bias-aware conversations that acknowledge and reduce weight stigma, enabling patients and pharmacists to collaboratively develop treatment plans that reflect the patient's goals, preferences, and experiences. Participants will be provided with a Train-the-Trainer toolkit that includes resources to support delivery of patient-centered obesity care and management.

This activity is supported by an educational grant from Lilly.

    Target Audience: health system pharmacists
